'Apollo and Daphne' - Bernini, 1622 - 25

Apollo has been hit by Cupid’s arrow, and Daphne, daughter of the river god, is the first woman he sees. He instantly falls in love with her. But Daphne has been hit by Cupid’s love-repelling arrow, and cannot love any man.
Apollo chases her relentlessly, until Daphne feels compelled to beg her father to somehow alter her appearance or her body so as to break Apollo’s enrapture. Suddenly, Daphne’s skin begins to turn into bark, and leaves sprout around her head: she is turning into a tree. Yet apollo remains, kissing and holding the tree.
